Emperor Norton I by WonderDookie Emperor Norton I by WonderDookie
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Norton I. Self-Proclaimed Emperor of These United States, and Protector of Mexico.

If you don't know who this guy is, you should check out this wiki page. He's seriously one of my new heroes. [link]

This was meant to be just a quick sketch but the project got out of hand a bit. It's made of painted watercolor paper pasted together.

haha. Yeah. When I first found out about him I was thinking to myself, "HOW have I not heard of this guy before!?!" Such a strange character. And I had read about a zillion references about him at different points too, but had never tied them together until then.

Thanks!

You're welcome. I'm surprised I had never heard of him, either, until recently. Thanks to a very boring day at work, and a dump of wikipedia on my phone, now I know about Emperor Norton I, and more than anyone really needs to know about naval mines. ;)

I'm so pleased to see someone create a piece of art around this fascinating fellow. I've always thought him one of the truly interesting eccentrics. Thank you for doing him justice, this is a great piece (and the rubber ducky is so amusing so playfully placed there!)

haha. Yeah. He's one of my all time favorites! I didn't know much about him until earlier this year, but then after that I was hooked.

Thanks! I definitely wanted to do him justice. (And the rubber ducky is a running gag. It's hidden in just about every one of my drawings. It seemed appropriate to make it pretty obvious in this one though).

I like the coloration. It gives the picture an antique look. Crazy stories like this make me love history. My quirky historical figure of choice is John B. Magruder [link]

Yeah! That's definitely what I was going for.

And as much as the guy sounds kind of quirky, I don't think I could have a confederate as my historical figure of choice. I'm union all the way. haha.

What an extraordinary fella! :D Its a shame he's not better known, he sounds wonderful! I love the sepia-faded look you've captured with this one, as if its an old photograph...and the delicate strands of the peacock feather... beautiful!

haha. Yeah. Although after doing a bit of research on the guy, I've found a bunch of references to him that I just didn't get before. Like, in the Christopher Moore books, "Bloodsucking Fiends" and "You Suck" there is a character that is based off of him. Even Twain wrote a character based off of him.

Brilliant! I hadn't even heard of him until I saw your picture - he sounds extraordinary.. I wonder if anyone has written a book on him? Which Twain character is it?

You know I don't know if anyone has written a book about him. Gaiman wrote an issue of Sandman about him though.

There's a character in Huck Finn named The King that's based off of him.

Yeah, Danster. What's that rubber ducky doing in there?
Looks good. Very professional-like. And has that kinda...regal quality to it.
Nice job on cutting them out so precisely. Think the background would've looked better darker (so the skin doesn't blend into the background). But other than that, it looks awesome - cool feather too

haha. You're right. It was a little too obvious in this one. Oh well. The cats out of the bag for a few people now anyway.

Yeah, you're right about the background. In person there is a lot more contrast between the two layers, but it's still not super obvious. I was thinking that it would have looked better lighter though.
