Japanese Macaque by WonderDookie Japanese Macaque by WonderDookie
I have a slight fascination with Japanese Macaques, better known as the hot springs lounging snow monkeys.

This frame is 3.5" X 2.5" so I thought it would be funny to barely fit him into the matte. The background is a piece of stained birch veneer.

Ha, this guy is great! Really nice job with the flesh colours. They look spot on.
Japanese Macaques are hilarious creatures. There was an excellent series on the BBC recently called Monkey Planet about primate behaviour and they looked at Japanese Macaques. I never knew social hierarchy played such a large role within the hot springs and not every monkey has the opportunity to lounge in them. I always assumed they just piled in there merrily together. They always appear so content it was strange to to see them attacking each other forcing some out of the pool into the cold. But yeah, awesome show.

I saw that documentary too. I was also really surprised about that. It seems like most monkey societies are really segregated and structured like that. Monkeys are jerks. haha.

Did you ever see the baboon documentary that Bill Bailey did? That one was really good too.

There are rumours going around that Japanese Macaques at one of the big tourist destinations have learned to pickpocket tourists, and use the money in vending machines to buy junk food. I've seen it mentioned a few times, but haven't ever seen pictures or video. I am skeptical, but that would be hilarious.

Suppose sharing the same genetic make up as us lager monkeys stands to reason they would act like jerks, haha. Kinda sad really. It was that Bonobo he was hanging out with that made my jaw drop. Couldn't believe what I was seeing. Planet of the Apes doesn't seem all that far away. haha.

I only ever caught a bit of that Bill Bailey doc. Keep meaning to pick it up on DVD if I ever see it going cheap. There's a series called Monkey Life I keep meaning to check out too. Think it's by National Geographic.

As much as I'd love those rumours to be true I suspect it's just that. I thought if it was true someone surely by now would have captured it on camera. I've seen footage of them grabbing stuff from tourists but nothing beyond that. If someone could catch them sitting in those hot springs though munching on a pack of peanut M&M's they bought from a vending machine that would be amazing.

The cuteness is undeniable. I very much like this. Out of curiousity, is it going in your esty store?

Thanks. Are you a fan of Japanese Macaques? I like it that they pick-pocket tourists.

I this was more of an experiment than anything. I wasn't sure how it would work with the small frame, so I didn't really consider it worthy of the shop.

I'm no more a fan of them than I am of monkeys and apes in general. They pickpocket tourists? That's hilarious! What are they interested in stealing? I've heard of monkeys that steal alcoholic drinks from unsuspecting vacationers in open-air bars. I think I just identify with the hot-spring-lounging aspect. I can relate to that pretty well. The colors, the expresion, and the composition in the under-sized frame just makes me smile.

Yeah. Apparently they figured out how vending machines work at one of the big tourist destinations. So they would steal money to buy junk food.
