Jim Henson for a caricature contest over at - [link]

I am such a Henson fiend. I joined the forum specifically for the Henson contest.

I assume people might wonder why I drew Kermit as a sock puppet. Like I said on my blog - "I just think it's really amazing how Jim Henson was able to take unassuming materials like bits of plastic and felt and create fully developed characters with such memorable personalities." This is my way of illustrating that thought process.

Comments and critiques always appreciated!

You got not only his features, but a great expression! I really like how the shadows of your paper effects add to the depth and creates a crisp shading of the shapes :)

Thanks again! I've really been enjoying playing around with those shapes in the caricatures. It has been a fun style to play around with and develop a bit.

Oh geez. Yeah, it's a bit embarrassing how much crap I have in my gallery. I keep meaning to go through and delete a lot of stuff... but they are my babies and I can't let them go. I also think it's interesting to go through someone's gallery and see the progression of their style over the years.

Holy hell, if your gallery contains stuff from only a year and a half's worth of practice, that is truly remarkable.

Nice work on this- I like the cut-out look of it.

Thank you! I know that it's terribly lazy of me, but sometimes I prefer the digital cut-out look to the real thing. It's just so much easier to get the right colours!

Nah, man- whatever makes you feel comfortable to work with. It's like Homer Simpson said, "If something's hard to do, it's not worth doing." :XD:

Thank you very much! I really enjoy doing these sorts of caricatures in this style. It's fun to try to break them up into their component parts a bit!

This is beautiful. Your faux cut outs just keep looking more and more real, the textures are great, and even before seeing the Kermit, there is NO DOUBT who the characature is of. Bravo!!

There actually weren't a lot of entries into the contest, which is a bit disappointing. I was mostly interested in seeing other people's versions rather than winning.

hey good friend once again another fantastic piece by your good self .

but i have a question about your art (as people as me all the time ) is it bits of different shades of paper or card that you use then you make shapes and overlay it to build up the image ?

just need to know , hope your ok to and busy

cheers

Thanks!

To answer your question - Sometimes I do these with different shades of paper cut into the proper shapes and then overlay and glue them. For this one I did it entirely digitally though (aside from the initial sketch). I just plan out what shapes I want, draw the shapes on different layers, and then put a slight drop shadow on it.

For my whole childhood I wanted to to copy that Kermit's famous expression.
Fortunately, it had no permanent influence on my face :)

I saw other contest entries and I think Yours is the best.
In some way that cut-out style is very "Hensonish"...

haha. I think you'd have to have a really flexible upper lip... and no jaw bone.

Thanks! I wasn't really going in it to win. I just had to enter after I saw that it was about Henson. He's one of my heroes.

Jaw bone! Maybe that's the reason I'd never succeed with that.:)

Well, Henson, despite of being an artist and a filmmaker was also an inventor, who brought something new not only for TV, but also for cinema and FX. Try to imagine Star Wars without muppet-like Yoda or "Labyrinth" made with stop-motion animation!
