Presidential Portraits by WonderDookie Presidential Portraits by WonderDookie
The 43 presidents of the United States in my faux cut-out caricature style.

I started this project more than a year ago hoping to have them all finished in time for the election. Ha! Oh well, better late then never.

One of my motivations for doing this series was to educate myself about historical presidents. How many can you name without having to look them up? I've been working on this project for so long a couple of the early ones already escape me.

Larger versions of each of the portraits, as well as a bit of trivia about each president, can be found on my blog - dansartblog.blogspot.com/searc…

The More you Know :star:

P.S. Sorry for the file size. There would be no way to show the details without it being a bit massive.

And here's a link to the wiki page about the presidents - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Presi…

Wonderful caricatures!  My father had us memorize the names of the U.S. Presidents in order.  I always got stuck between Lincoln and McKinley since most of those guys were seat warmers.  The only one that I did remember for that period was Rutherford B. Hayes.  Not a great President, but he had a cool name and epic beard!

haha. That's fun. My dad didn't really get into presidential history until we were past that age. Making us memorize the presidents may be something he would do now though.

A lot of people are really down on Grant, who was president during that time period, and I think that's a bit unfair. Anyone who prosecutes the KKK so fanatically as Grant did gets a gold star in my book.

haha. The things that were most memorable for me about Hayes were that he turned down a second term, and Mark Twain campaigned for him. That would have been something to see.

No:) The link is there to inform people who might not know who the caricatures might represent. Especially people who don't know much about the U.S. presidents or are not American.

Whatis the big difference between both of your partys, in our land we have usually 4-5 partys XD
So are they two extremely different, or just a bit in some questions?

In the USA. the 2 major parties that control us are the Democratic party and the Republican party. There is also a Libertarian Party,Constitution Party, and a "green" party. We have virtually HUNDREDS of minor political parties with no major power.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

The 2 MAJOR political parties are extremely different. The Republican party is in general anti-abortion,opposed to same sex marriage and LGBT rights although there is some Republicans who support same sex marriage and LGBT rights and are pro-choice. The Democratic party believes in more government control and regulations and stricter gun control generally, while the Republican Party is usually opposed to gun control and big government.
The symbol for the Republican Party is an elephant and it's color is red. The symbol for the Democrat Party is a donkey and it's color is blue.

Nixon had that ever present stubble. I do think it's strange that there haven't been any bearded presidents since Harrison with a beard though. I think they look regal. Most beards anyway. My own does not look so good. haha.

No. The fashion comes and goes over time. in the 18th and 19th century they were out of fashion until the 1860s Civil war. Then fashionable until the 1890s, when America began to shave again - mustaches were still ok, but not beards. Beards came back in the late 1960's, thanks to the counter culture, but not for presidents. Punk killed off a lot of "hippyish" beardism, along with flared pants, in the late 1970s. Personally, I  don't like beards at all (or flared pants!) - but it's just my subjective opinion

Yeah I don´t need a beard too tbh XD But many hipsters want it.

Also some say, we don´t have a common youth culture anymore,
like in the 60s 70s 80s, where everyone wanted the same. Now
we have such a huge diversity of different groups, that there is not so
much all share together.

This is fantastic! I really love the kind of paper cut out look, and the colors are so soft and nice. This style is so lovely, a feast for the eyes

Not being from the USA, I can only name a few of them, but from the ones I recognize, I'm sure the caricatures are spot on.

Thank you very much! I've been playing with hat paper cut-out style for ages now. I feel like it is finally starting to come into its own. I keep juggling between doing these digitally and traditionally.

haha. Some of the caricatures are more accurate than others. Especially some of those older presidents that I just had to base on really bad photos or painted portraits.

Aah, historical illustration... my brother requested me to draw some caricatures from the XVI-XVII centuries from portraits and I'm having a hard time figuring out what kind of headwear are they even wearing because most of them look like vaguely hat-shaped black lumps barely discernible from the background...

haha. Yeah. Good luck with that. It's a lot harder than it seems. Especially since I'm sure some of the old portrait artists were a bit generous ignoring some of the more unattractive/distinctive features.

I just love how, when any post featuring Obama is popular on deviantart, people pile on the "lets dump on Obama" bandwagon. Get a life, people.
