Velvet Worm by WonderDookie Velvet Worm by WonderDookie
I've been busy with my masters research, but I thought it would be fun to do a quick drawing of a velvet worm, the creatures I have been studying, in the style of the ABC book that I made for my niece for Christmas - [link]

I'll be out in the cold looking for these again tomorrow too. Fun fun!

Enjoy!

It's amazing how you can make a velvet worm look cute. :wow:

haha. I think they always look cute! But I'm a bit biased, considering I have spent the last year of my life studying them.

Aren't they? I think that most people who study the velvet worms don't like to use the word "cute", that's I think that's the best word for them!

Thanks!

That's cool. I wasn't sure if that was a mythical creature, or an existing animal!

haha. They do look like something imaginary. They essentially evolved hundreds of millions of years ago, so they look nothing like most animals nowadays.

Thanks!

It's so cute, I want to be able to pat it without squishing and killing it.

You could if you patted it really really lightly. You definitely couldn't give it a big hug though.

You just made it look so cute. I love the little drool over there. The texture and shapes look great as well!

It's great to know your masters is going well! Congratulations on that, from one biologist to another :)

haha. Thanks! I actually think they are legitimately a bit cute. They look so silly with all of their little stubby legs.

Yeah. The masters has been going surprisingly well. It's costing a small fortune coming all the way down to New Zealand to work on it, but hopefully the investment will pay off in the end. I'm hoping I'll actually be able to publish the results of the research too!

Fascinating...though I don't imagine they're that cute in real life. :XD:

I actually think they are pretty cute! And so does my wife, who normally is NOT into invertebrates. I say sometimes that velvet worms are the "closest that invertebrates will ever come to being cute." I think it's their stubby little legs and antennae - just look at them - [link]

Whaddaya know? They ARE pretty cute. Must have something to do with the chubby legs and antennae. Yup. :XD:

haha. Yeah! It's weird isn't it? They are pretty cute right up until you see them hunt anyway. They spit sticky saliva all over the prey, and then inject the prey with venom that dissolves their insides.

OMG, I just read on your blog that you're a biologist? I thought for sure you were a professional animator/illustrator. I need to step up my game!

Excellent work by the way! I bet your niece was super excited!

What is your master's project on, may I ask? My wife has a degree in Bio/Chem and I've always been interested in science, second to art.

Thanks!

Well thank you for the assumption that I'm a pro. That's flattering!

My masters project is a habitat selection study on these velvet worms. Basically I spend hours a day going around looking for the worms in parks around town, measuring environmental variables at random sites, and then I'll make a fancy statistical model to see which of those variables is a good predictor for finding the worms.

I've always juggled between science and art as well. Science eventually won out though.

Sorry for the delayed response. :)

Haha, my pleasure. You give me solace that I could have pursued science as a career & still be an accomplished illustrator. Kudos man!

My wife was a biochem major and found your study very interesting! :)

haha. Well thank you very much for that! It's a bit difficult to balance the two pursuits because they are so time consuming, but it IS possible.

Well hopefully I'll be able to get my research published before too long, if you wife is ever interested in reading more about it.

Thanks! It's actually a felt texture, so that definitely explains the puppet look.
